Recent changes that affect Voters
• Voters must reside at their current address for 28 consecutive days prior to Election Day and show ID as described below:
NOTE: The ID does not need the voter's current address.
• Wisconsin DOT-issued driver license or Wisconsin DOT-issued identification card, even if driving privileges are revoked or suspended. If the license is expired, the expiration date must be since the last November general election. Wisconsin identification cards may be obtained from the Department of Transportation (DOT) free of charge upon request. www.wisconsindmv.gov
• Military ID card issued by a U.S. uniformed service. If expired, the expiration date must be since the last November general election.
• A U.S. passport. If expired, the expiration date must be since the last November general election.
• A certificate of naturalization that was issued not earlier than 2 years before the date of an election at which it is presented.
• A driving receipt or identification card receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT.
• An identification card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin.
• Voters at the polls must sign the poll book before a ballot is issued unless disability prevents them from signing.
• Voters who do not have identification may vote a provisional ballot.
If a voter has recently had a name change and the name has not been changed on the ID, the voter should continue to register and/or vote using the previous name until the ID is changed.
VOTING ABSENTEE
• If you request an absentee ballot by mail, you must provide a copy of your identification in order for the ballot to be sent to you.
• If you are an indefinitely confined voter (permanent absentee), you are exempt from providing your identification.
• If you are in a nursing home, you are exempt from providing your identification as long as the 2 Special Voting Deputies that come to assist with the voting process sign as witnesses.
• If you reside in an assisted living facility, you are exempt from providing your identification if you have one witness plus the signature of a representative of the facility.
• If you vote absentee in the Clerk's office, you must provide identification. ABSENTEE VOTING IN THE CLERK'S OFFICE STARTS 15 DAYS PRIOR TO ELECTION DAY AND ENDS ON THE FRIDAY BEFORE THE ELECTION. NO VOTING ON THE FRIDAY OR MONDAY PRECEDING THE ELECTION.
• Military and permanent overseas electors are exempt from showing identification.
VOTER REGISTRATION
• You may register by mail up to 20 days before an election. If you are a first time voter in Wisconsin, and you register by mail, you must provide proof of residence.
• You may register in the Clerk's office prior to 20 days before an election without providing proof of residence.
• If you register in the Clerk's office between the 20th day before an election and the Friday before the election, proof of residence must be provided. The proof of residence must contain your name and current address.
• Following is a list of acceptable proof of residence forms:
• Current and valid Wisconsin driver's license or identification card.
• Any other identification card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit
• Any identification card issued by an employer and bearing a photo of the card holder, but not a business card.
• A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election.
• A gas, electric, or telephone service statement (utility bill) for the period commencing not earlier than 90 days before Election Day. Electronic statements may be used only if printed.
• A bank statement. Electronic statements may be used only if printed.
• A paycheck.
• A check or other document issued by a unit of government
• An affidavit on public or private social service agency letterhead identifying a homeless voter and describing the individual's residence for voting purposes.
• A residential lease (cannot be used if registering by mail).
